Our Heartiest Congratulations to our triumphant soccer team, which defied the odds and obtained third placing in the WanHe Cup Soccer Competition. Despite a valiant fight in the semi-finals, we lost to Team NUS by the closest of margins. (2-3). In the fight for 3 rd /4 th placing, we trashed Team Singapore polytechnic by a landslide score of 9 -1. The opposition got an early lead in the 10 th min of the game but it was one-way traffic from then on as the boys put NINE goals past the hapless SP goalkeeper.

Overall, it was a highly successful tournament for our boys as our team not only took back the Third-Placing Trophy; but we also won the tournament's Top Scorer award, which went to 2 nd year student, YU BING TAO. The unity of the team was evident as they vowed to stay together as a team and attempt to win the trophy in next years tournament, under the flag of PORTMAN.

Bowling Tournament

As one of the most popular leisure pursuits in Singapore, bowling is no longer an unfamiliar game to our international students. This can be seen from the overwhelming response to Portman Bowling Tournament 2003 organized by Sports and Fitness Club on 21 November 2003.

The tournament was held at Superbowl Marina, which is just 1 level below Portman campus. There were altogether 24 participants who were divided into 6 groups. Most of them played pretty well although they did not practised much before the competition. They even had their own cheering teams to cheer loudly to encourage a strike or spare.

Finally, Group 6 won the championship with total scores of 445. The 4 lucky guys, Cai Lu, Zheng Nan, Li Xin and He Yu Zhi, walked away with S$100 telephone card. Group 2 and Group 4 won 2 nd and 3 rd, , and their prizes were phone cards with value of S$60 and S$40 respectively.

Canoeing

The school organised a Canoeing activity on 31 st of October in the afternoon from 1pm to 5pm. We were told to meet at the administrative office at Singapore Dragon Boat Association that is located near to Nicoll highway.

We were advised to wear something light and comfortable for the canoeing session. The school also recommended us to wear sandals as footwear for convenience and protection. We were also advised to bring other things such as water bottle, sunscreen lotion, shampoo, towel, clothing for changing and a plastic bag for wet clothing.

When we reached the Singapore Dragon Boat Association, we were told how to use the paddles in the correct way and do a bit of warming-up exercises. We were also advised on the rules and regulations of canoeing and safety measures to take during the event.

Later, we carried the boat and the paddles to the sea to canoe; I was very excited because this was the first time I actually got to canoe. In the past, I only saw such canoeing activity on television and thought that it was difficult. But now, it is actually quite easy to manage. We all rowed the double canoe and the whole activity lasted for three hours.

The canoeing activity was an unforgettable and thrilling experience for me. From this activity, l had learnt about the importance of teamwork and friendship.

A Chinese Chess Competition

Portman Business School organized a Chinese Chess Competition on 17 th October in the afternoon from 2pm to 5pm. It was the first activity that I have participated in since I just joined Portman. The competition officially starts at 2.30pm. We were divided into five groups. The rules of the competition were that the winner of every individual group would proceed into the next round, gradually to the semifinals and final round. I was assigned to the fifth group. My opponent was another student called Chen Chen.

Every contestant appeared self-confident and believed that they have acquired good skills and have full confidence of winning the competition. The match has also attracted a lot of onlookers. Although they have not participated in the match, but they were very interested in this competition. They cheered the contestant on while watching the competition.

The competition background was also filled with soothing music. Some contestants' behaviors were very relaxed, and other contestants have fallen into pondering. My competitor was a male student dressed in red clothes. We adopted conservative tactics at the beginning of the match and did not dare to intrude the opponent domain rashly. When being in the midfield, I got a chance, and broke into his strong defenses, obtaining a favorable position. Through fierce contention, I obtained the obvious advantage. At last, I won the first rival and proceeded into the second round where my opponent was a student called Ke Yuwen. But in the second round, I was defeated by the rival's fast offensive and I lost the match.

When the competition results were released, I have acquired the third place. After participating in the Chinese Chess Competition, I find it very meaningful and able to adapt to the new environment of study more easily. It also helped us to get to know other students and to build closer ties with them.

Singapore Botanic Gardens Outdoor Rhapsody Concert

In the evening of 16 November 2003 , Portman Art & Drama Club organised a trip for the students to participate in the Outdoor Rhapsody Concert held in the Singapore Botanic Gardens. This was an event to get many Chinese people to know the traditional culture of China and to appreciate classical music.

Eight persons attended this significant trip. When we arrived there, the park looked quite natural, we have never seen so tall and big trees in the park, which was flourishing with tropical plants. It was a good place for people to relax. We can also see some people exercising along the pathway that was built across the grassland and forest. This is an ideal place for family and groups of friends to gather around and picnic. We walk around through the park and took many pictures to retain this unforgettable moment. Then we were sitting around on the grassland in front of the stage. We chatted and shared interesting news and discussed the Chinese culture.

Suddenly, we heard an exciting music --- the concert started. The first performance is known as orchestra ‘Overture'. The attractive music made us stop chatting to admire the concert. There were more than 50 players on the stage. This was our first time to listen to a big concert in Singapore. The concert lasts for one hour. The music was appealing filled with sounds so heavenly that it received a lot of applause from the audience.

I personally feel that this concert was a big success as it also attracted a lot of foreign audience where they gather and sit on the grassland, appreciating the special Chinese music in a heavenly atmosphere.

Tour to Khong Guan Biscuit Factory

On 26 th of November in the afternoon, our school held an educational tour to Khong Guan, Singapore's most famous local biscuit factory. It is located at Jurong Industrial Park and is one of the earliest factories in Singapore. Khong Guan's start up marked the development of Singapore in 1960s. It is renowned for its high standards in providing quality, value and freshness.

Judging by its historical building and its old-fashioned production line, it is not surprising that Khong Guan biscuit factory was established in 1947. Later, as we toured around the biscuit factory, we got to see the process where homegrown Khong Guan biscuits are baked and packed.

Unlike other modern factories, Khong Guan biscuit factory has a rich history. Throughout the years the success of Khong Guan depends on its constant research on product innovation and quality control. It has grown and developed into a well-known and respected worldwide brand.

In 1980s, as the world biscuit market become more competitive and to provide constant customer satisfaction, these two major factors forced the two enterprising brothers of Khong Guan to change its ways of conducting business. Thus, they employed modern marketing concepts in their management. The well designed packaging, advanced production technology, providing quality products at a reasonable price and efficient marketing promotion have successfully increased the company's competitiveness.

After the tour, we were given a sample biscuit product, a courtesy of Khong Guan. I was inspired by how Khong Guan can develop from a small biscuit manufacturer to an international brand.

Now, Khong Guan is firmly entrenched in the Singapore market and has developed a strong footing in regional markets. It is available everywhere displayed on the shelves of every supermarket. With the current expansion, the annual sales have reached up to 10 million dollars. Furthermore, it continues to seek new markets and develop its product lines to increase market shares. Production plants have been set up in China, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Philippines. These are aimed to develop a Khong Guan biscuit kingdom.
